Automated voice mail can at times seem like it was designed to get you to lose your cool and hang up. Remember that you are trying to remain calm so that you can appear to be rational when you finally get to speak with a person.

Imagine that the person on the other end of the line is an old friend. Most of us have heard the old adage, "You can catch more flies with sugar than you can with vinegar." Remember that the person you are speaking with is a fellow human being, and should be treated with respect.

For example: My wife and I are flying to San Francisco in a few days, and received an automated call this morning informing us that our flight has been rescheduled to leave one hour early.
